Without a doubt, one of my favorite reads of 2015 was E.E. Giorigi’s Akaela (Mayake Chronicles Book 1) so I was super stoked to read the next book in this exciting series (even if it took me longer to get around to reading than I’d hoped – sorry E.E.!).
Before starting this one, you definitely need to read the first book in the series. Why? Because Athel starts out just a couple of weeks after the events at the end of Akaela and you’ll be completely lost without knowing what happened in book one.
Though I really liked book one of the series, I actually like this one better! It seemed more exciting and more like there was a sense of urgency that we didn’t get with book one. Keep reading for my full review, but know that it does contain minor spoilers. Or, skip over to Amazon to read the sample inside the book.
I knew that I was in this one for the long haul when … I was told that it was book two of The Mayake Chronicles. Seriously, that is how much I loved the first book. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t hurt that the writing is strong, but I knew going into this that I was going to like it if it was anything at all like book one.
Style snippet … unfortunately, I don’t have an excerpt for this one, but the writing style hasn’t really changed any from Akaela – so check out the excerpt from it. (if I get a short excerpt for this book, I will update this section.
What surprised me about this book … was how much stronger the sense of urgency feeling was while reading it compared to book one. The author is great at creating such cool worlds – this is a kind of a wild-west post-apocalyptic story that is YA but doesn’t really feel like it. As I was reading this book, I couldn’t help but feel anxiety about what Athel was going to find in that cave and fear for Akaela when she is facing down the guardian.
My favorite character … I’m still sticking with the siblings being my two favorites. I know, it’s kind of a copout choice but it’s the truth!
Final thoughts … I loved this book even more than the first one! I totally did not see the betrayal coming at all. And I absolutely loved that the slimeball brothers from book one got a chance at redemption. Of course, I hated them in book one and started out the same way with this one, but by the end that wasn’t the case. I’m really looking forward to book three! Even though this is a complete book without a real cliffhanger, I’ve still got those unanswered questions! Who is that girl? Where did she come from? Are there more like her? If so, how?! Will everyone live in the old city now? Waiting for the next book in a good series is always the worst, huh? Well done, E.E. Giorgi!
After reading this book, I discovered that there is a short story that you don’t have to read before this book, but that is supposed to make some things make more sense. And, you can get that story for free by joining the author’s email newsletter list! Find the sign up on her website.
In the interest of full disclosure, I did receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. And I sincerely loved it!
