If you’re on a quest to read some of the best hard science fiction books, then we like to think that the list below is a good place to start. Now, if you’re new to hard sci-fi books, here’s a quick intro to the genre – it’s all about plausibility in terms of science and tech. So, nothing too far-fetched but a plot that you think could actually happen someday, even if not till the distant future.
There is a good reason that author Douglas E. Richard’s Mind’s Eye novel is consistently on the top of the best sellers list on Amazon. It’s a fast-paced read that really grabs you from the moment you start reading it.
Yeah, it’s not without it’s problems. For me, I thought that the romance was totally forced, out of place and detracted from the story. And the writing quality isn’t the best out there. That being said, it was still a fun read and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to give hard sci-fi a try.

The Martian: A Novel
I bet there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve already read this one. Author Andy Weir’s novel seems to be pretty much everywhere these days, including at the top of the best sellers chart on Amazon.
It is really a fascinating tale centered around a lone astronaut. This is truly some great science fiction and probably one of the best science fiction books of 2014. But, if you missed this one last year, definitely make it a priority to pick it up this year.
The Omega Force Series
So here’s the thing – author Joshua Dalzelle has created a rather fun hard sci-fi series here with his Omega Force series. Right now, there are seven finished novels to fill it out. That’s pretty great news for readers who enjoy a good series with lots to read.
Though book one is cheap, I suggest that you instead jump right to the Omega Force Series Omnibus (Books 1-3) collection that has a good price – you get more books for a cheaper per-book cost. Plus, these are good reads so I think you’ll end up wanting to move past the first one. If you have doubts, give the sample on Amazon a good read and see if it meets your liking.

It’s rare to come across a book that is on the best sellers list and doesn’t have any bad reviews. But, that is exactly what author Matthew Mather has managed to create with his sci-fi technothriller Darknet.
If you’re like me, then the cover for this book caught your attention immediately but didn’t really scream science fiction. Well, don’t let that deter. Mather has written other sci-fi books, including the wildly popular CyberStorm. Sure, this novel might lean a wee bit more towards the thriller side of the spectrum, but I think hard science fiction fans will appreciate the more technical details of this one.

The Thought Readers (Mind Dimensions Book 1)
With this book, author Dima Zales has managed to come up with a story that is very engaging. Plus, the cover looks great and immediately caught my attention.
This is the first book in a series, and yes, other books are already available for purchase.
So, if you’re looking for a cool storyline that might not be your usual hard sci-fi book, then definitely give this one a try. It likely won’t appeal to everyone, but you might have fun reading it.
