Finding new authors to read can be a time consuming process, especially since you never know how long it will take the writer to actually release more titles in a series. Well, if you enjoy reading space operas, then you can find some pretty good books that are actually free and the first in a series. That means that you have other books in the same universe to read if you enjoy the first one. But the best part is that it won’t cost you anything to give the new-to-you author a try!
Here are some of the space opera novels we’ve found that are currently free and part of an ongoing series. (Keep in mind that prices can change at any time and depending on when you read this, some of these may no longer be free – prices listed on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers should be considered the correct, and current price).
The Terran Gambit (Episode #1: The Pax Humana Saga)
Author Endi Webb currently offers The Terran Gambit (Episode #1: The Pax Humana Saga) up for free on Amazon and it’s one of the top rated books in the category right now.
It is an action packed story that features a kickass male lead. And this is a full length sci-fi novel, so hunker down cause you’ll be reading this one for a while.
When you’re done with it, you can find two other titles in this series, as well as host of other sci-fi books written by Webb.
Reckless Rescue (A Barren Planet Romance Book 1)
Like romance in your space opera books? If so, author Rinelle Grey’s Reckless Rescue (A Barren Planet Romance Book 1) might be just what you’re into.
As of now, there are two other books available in this series – and they’re both in Kindle Unlimited, which means you can read this entire series for free!
Exodus (The Exodus Trilogy Book 1)
Part of a completely trilogy, author Andreas Christensen’s Exodus (The Exodus Trilogy Book 1) is set in 2072 when people are Earth are dealing with an extinction threat.
The trilogy is complete and the other two books can read for free as well, if you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription. I also want to point out that most of the author’s books are in KU, so if you enjoy this one, you’ll have several other series to start for free.
Mercenary Instinct (The Mandrake Company series)
Writing as Ruby Lionsdrake, the pen name of fantasy author Lindsay Buroker does not disappoint with Mercenary Instinct (The Mandrake Company series).
As of right now, there are three other books available in this series with another scheduled for upcoming release.
And for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, all of the books are currently part of KU – so read them all for free while you can!
Survivor (The Nova Chronicles Book 1)
Here we have another fantasy author, Saffron Bryant, dipping her toes into science fiction under a pen name. Saff’s Survivor (The Nova Chronicles Book 1) focuses on a badass heroine who is set to stop an alien invasion.
Sound like your kind of book? Well, if you enjoy it, there are two others available in the series. And, the follow-up novels are available in Kindle Unlimited – so, another entire series that KU members can read for free!
Quantum Tangle (Targon Tales – Sethran Book 1)
Author Chris Reher’s Quantum Tangle (Targon Tales – Sethran Book 1) is an exciting read that is actually a spin-off from her Nova series.
You can find a few more books in this series as well others by the author. And it looks like most of the author’s sci-fi novels are on Amazon!
The Pattern Ship (The Pattern Universe Book 1)
Author Tobias Roote’s The Pattern Ship (The Pattern Universe Book 1) is a fast paced space opera novel that is a good way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The third book in this series was just released earlier this month, so readers who enjoy this novel have two other novels as well as a couple of other sci-fi titles to read. KU readers won’t be able to find all of the series for free though, but the books are priced very cheap.
The Enemy of an Enemy (Lost Tales of Power Book 1)
If you enjoy coming into a series that already has several completed books, then you will definitely want to give author Vincent Trigili’s The Enemy of an Enemy (Lost Tales of Power Book 1) a try.
Book 7 of this series was just released earlier this month, plus the author has other books available not in this series. Unfortunately for KU subscribers, you will not find his titles available there.
Starship’s Mage: Episode 1
Unlike the other books on this list, author Glynn Stewart’s Starship’s Mage: Episode 1 is actually a novella instead of a full-length novel. It is part of a 5-episode series and each episode has been released.
If you enjoy this free space opera novella, I suggest you buy the ombinus afterwards, which is the collection of all the episodes at a lower price than if you bought each one separately.
The Boy who Lit up the Sky (The Two Moons of Rehnor Book 1)
If you like your book series to have a lot of readily available novels to read, then J. Naomi Ay’s The Boy who Lit up the Sky (The Two Moons of Rehnor Book 1) will not disappoint. There are a whopping 16 finished novels in this series.
I have not read this series, and the reviews are mixed on some of the installments, but I do love that so many titles set in the same universe are available and ready to be devoured.
Have you read any of these? Know of a great free space opera that’s first in a series that we didn’t mention? Feel free to share it in the comments.
