If you’re looking for a great gift for a kid that you know, then consider sharing the awesomeness of science fiction books to them. There are a lot of really great sci fi books for kids that you can choose from for kids between the ages of around 8 to 12 years old. So, if you’re looking for books for someone in this age group, then consider some of the titles that we selected below.

The Giver – Lois Lowry

the giver lois lowryI know that some schools are including this one as required reading, but if not, definitely give this to a kid who enjoys good books. Though Lowry has said that she never really saw it as sci-fi, the setting is a utopian society that definitely meets sci-fi criteria.

I actually was assigned to read this in a college science fiction class and loved it – so it is definitely one that adults can read and get a lot of enjoyment out of. The only negative thing that I have to say about it is that I think it would have been a much stronger story if there was no sequel. That being said, it is still a really compelling read.

You can download this one for your Kindle .

Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card

ender's game bookThere is a good chance that the movie version of this book has already been seen by whomever you want to buy it for. But, we all know that books are usually better than the movie version. That makes this military science fiction book still a good choice for any kids in your life.

It’s got aliens, a future Earth and so much awesomeness that will lend to hours of reading time. I suggest going old school and ordering up a used paperback copy for a super low price instead of paying the higher price for the ebook version.

A Wrinkle in Time – Madeleine L’Engle

a wrinkle in timeThis is one of those classic scifi books that most people read as a kid, right? That’s cause a lot of schools assign it as required reading. Mine didn’t though. In fact, I was an adult before I ever picked this one up.

Don’t let that happen to the kids in your life! It’s a great science fiction book for kids and has just enough fantasy elements in it to keep things exciting.

The City of Ember – Jeanne DuPrau

the city of emberI love a good post-apocalyptic series and this is the first book of such a series. The author has managed to setup a really interesting society that you get instantly drawn to, so be sure to set aside a few hours to devour this one.

There are four books available in this series, so if you enjoy this one, there are three others set in this world. While not exactly a classic, this book is maybe 10 years old or so, which means that a lot of kids might not have read this one.

You can get this book online on Amazon or look for a used copy at a local bookstore.
